The colonel let a quick, amused sort of chuckle after That major dodge his question, with the regular ISB brand of bullshit. Not in a million years did Bax ever think that he'd get a chance to exchange barbs with ranking officer like this, obviously back in his real imperial career. During his brief stint in prison, it'd been ISB agents like this shitstain that had grilled him over and over.
"My dear Major, there is such a thing as a vacation. It may be an understandably foreign concept to you, but you must try it sometime." Seeglain replied, honestly looking equal parts bored and irritated. Honestly, Bax was happy to push the man's buttons, just to see of he could get him irritated enough to try a swing. Without his Stormie's around, that was probably the best the Major could hope for.
"I doubt it, honestly. My transfer to Shili is a recent one, and my only companions of late have been my datapad, my desk, and the junior officer who brings me my caf. Inspecting my troops daily is basically the only breath of fresh I get.
"Besides, I highly doubt we'd have the same circle of friends, even in an ideal setting, major."

The Colonel was certainly an audacious one. The youthful look, the attitude, the overall bold action that was choosing to verbally joust with a man who could, summarily under his own authority, send him to Kessel for life. It implied either a remarkable sense of self-importance, or possibly excellent family connections. It was almost worth pursuing later, if Major Derne hadn't already been so busy. Luckily swatting down the pretensions of the Officer Corps was a task left to Vader, and those with copious time to spare. Not for busy officers.
So Raxel smiled thinly, almost cordially.
"You have quite the sharp tongue Colonel, I shouldn't be surprised you were sent to Shili. The back end of space, certainly no more than a million inhabitants. Hardly worthy of a garrison at all. I myself was there for very different reasons. The back end of space is an excellent hiding place for Jedi. The Togruta contributed to their Order for millennia you see. A nostalgic people in a way, it was just too hard to resist the call of old times I suppose, our nets took in a good haul. And as to our circles of friends..."
The smile showed some teeth that were entirely too clean, and it took on a more predatory look.
"I think you're quite right."

The Major's talk of Jedi seemed to come out of nowhere, and stuck the colonel as supremely odd. One might argue that the ISB pissant was trying to talk himself up with exploits against the galaxy's former greatest warriors, yet he might've had another motive in mind. Not that it mattered since Seeglain really didn't exist, but with a little effort Bax figure some evidence might be planned connecting him to lingering Jedi activity.
It would've been a really bastard move.
"By that tale I assume your company consists of Inquisitors as well. You're role on Shili, as well as other ISB men, undoubtedly must've been delegated to the position of flushing out the Jedi. As with any great hunt, the Inquisitors used their hounds to chase their prey until they could move it for the kill. I'm sure you and the others were given an appropriate "treat" for your help doing so." The colonel stated in a dry cadence, as he kept his face neutral during his interpretation of the events that happened.
"Now, major. This conversation has been a pleasure, but I'd like to continue my walk on the veranda."
With that said, Seeglain extended his hand again for a parting shake. "Til next we meet."

Major Derne chuckled, a deeply unpleasant sound. It was at once, supremely arrogant, cruel, threatening, and almost seductive. His one eye looked at the Colonel with a twisted sort of mirth, the corners of his mouth in an open smile. It was not the humor of equals. No, it was the exact reaction an adult would have at a family holiday, when a child said something inadvertently amusing. It was contemptuous. What was worse, it wasn't even disguised.
"You're very amusing Colonel, perhaps I will visit you on Shili. Oh have no fear, entirely for social reasons. What's a little fencing between officers? We are, after all, on the same side, though I know some in the conventional military whisper to the contrary when they think no one is listening. Besides, I left some... Loose ends before. I confess I'd rather like to tie them up neatly. Yes, until then Colonel Seeglain. I'll be in touch."
He shook the hand, cordially but rather too tightly, then turned on his heel and began walking away. He quietly produced his comm and spoke.
"Renate? Yes, I'd like you to schedule me for a minor trip to Shili... oh yes, next week should suffice..."

For the first time since he'd started trying to unnerve the colonel, Derne succeeded. Seeglain had to let out a toothy grin of his own, to keep the Bax underneath from squirming. The major was one creepy bastard for sure, and it seemed like a blessing to finally part company. Yet in some strange way he wished their paths would really cross again, just to joust with the man again.
As soon as the good major turned his back, Bax emerged for a moment to shoot a quick bird at him, before he spun on his heel to walk away as well. He didn't know exactly how much time had passed since he'd originally been found, but the junker prayed Kara was still at the waiting spot.
Not trusting the major to really mind his own business, Bax maintained a leisurely stroll back over to the gazebo and its waterfall. He even made a point to act like he was vaguely amused at their architecture and pattern of the cascading water.
"Kara...Kara...?" He whispered quietly, in bursts akin to coughs from an indifferent expression.

"Shhh you fool," Kara whispered edgily, though softer, "Not so loud."
She peered out from behind a particularly thick hedge, the same concern evident on her alien features as had been so readily apparent. The way the words almost hissed past her sharp teeth was in a strange way not just urgent, but the kind of exotic quirk that was actually a little cute. Her Togruti accent insisted on leaking out a little thicker as well.
"There's no stairs, no ladders. I couldn't find any rope either, I don't like this."
The Togruta's eyes flitted about, looking for anything past the distance her other senses could aid with. He was still there, at the edge of it. The scent, almost the voice, though she couldn't guess what he might have said...
****
"Yes, you heard me, Colonel Ventac Seeglain."
The reply his assistant made brought an immediate frown.
"Well check the date on the record, the man is right here. Shili is a backwater posting, it's possible you simply don't-"
Derne's fist tightened into a ball, and his teeth grit. So that was it then, playing him for the fool. Well making things a matter of personal pride was a danger for the con artist, wasn't it? And the artist's luck was now up.
"Send in the back-up detail, I'll notify the security here at once."

Bax snorted a little as he heard his friend's voice above the babbling of the falls. Her words had a certain twang to them, that just seemed adorable coming out of the togruta. Like deep down she was a rough and tumble farm girl back on Shili. That actually brought up a point he had raised with Kara so far: what was her family and work background in the past. None of it changed how he felt about her, but he'd still like to know.
"I don't like it either, but I think we still have one more option: the falls." The junker pointed out, motioning towards the Gazebo's center attraction. Honestly, jumping blindly down to a potentially shallow pool wasn't exactly and ideal scenario, but it really was their best option. The other would've involved possibly running into the major, and Bax really didn't want to have to kill the man with his barehands if he threatened Kara.
"Look, I can head down first, and be ready to catch you, or we can go down together." The junker suggested, before the distinct sound of approaching boots on stone turned his attention back the way he'd come. Even with the best case scenario, it was the major coming their way, at worse it was his entourage...
"OK, were jumping. On three?" Bax rambled off quickly, before extending a hand out to Kara.

Kara softly bit her lower lip, the waterfall option unappealing. She'd peered over it experimentally once, and it was a nasty drop. Into how much water, she wasn't sure. Added awareness or not, she couldn't gauge the depth well enough for comfort. Her hearing picked up on it before his though, and she winced. The sound was heavy, there were probably six of them. The charade was definitely up by now, and even if it wasn't, it'd be over the second he saw her.
Sikaara took a deep breath in, and then out. The Togruta slowly looked over to Bax.
"Now might be the time to tell you, I'm afraid of heights."
Her hand reached out and latched onto his, her grip so tight through the glove that it offset any risk of slipping.
"Same time," She added softly. "One..."

"Three." Bax aburtly exclaimed, before using their strong grip to pull Kara closer to him. After a short exhale, he used his other arm to lift her from the ground, and released his previous grip to instead hold her princess style. Afterward, he duly noted that all that ass and tits really added more weight than he'd imagined. Still, this one only one of them would potentially break their legs on impact.
Mindful of the approaching footsteps, Bax paused only a moment to give his friend a quick kiss to the cheek, before taking the plunge over the edge. They fell through dry air for a split second before entering the fall's stream. A strong feeling of being in a plummeting ocean dominated all of his sense, he still kept his grip tight on Kara.
It would only loosen when their descent came to an end, as they hit the water surface of the fountain below. Thankfully for Bax's knees, the bottom was quite deep, so much in fact there was still several feet to the floor when their momentum completely halted in the depths. Releasing Kara to freely move around, the junker looked around the fountain bottom's polished marble finish for a few appreciative seconds, then started swimming to the surface.

Kara began steeling herself for the jump, mindful the act of willfully jumping that height would be hard. However instead she also discovered that they were riding the emotional rollercoaster instead, after all Bax managed to catch her totally unprepared. It wasn't easy to do generally-speaking. Instead of jumping, Bax spun a wide-eyed Kara directly into his arms, carrying her with strength she really didn't know he had. her heart pounded in her chest, and she was able to make the calculation why he was doing it as his lips were touching her cheek.
It was because he wanted to be the one to take the damage from the fall. It was a genuinely selfless act, and it really sank in for the first time that he'd done something a lot more than she'd realized. Coming back for her, risking his life for her not once, but twice... That wasn't something anyone else had ever done for her. And she found herself really melting over it.
At least until the horrible sensation of falling grabbed her, and she tightened her grip about Bax and found herself screaming. Luckily it didn't last long. They splashed down, and Sikaara got a large mouthful of water. Luckily her instincts kicked in, and she kicked her way to the surface, sputtering up a mouthful of water, looking about through water-drenched eyes for Bax.

Bax's time without air was thankfully brief, as he finally breached the the surface. In the back of his head he'd expected to find a lot of guys holding blasters at his face, so finding Kara waiting for him instead was a nice surprise. The junker only gasped for air momentarily, before flashing his friend the best grin he could muster.
"Well, that turned out better than I expected!" He stated with gusto, as he tried to get a good grip on the slick marble. Bax's fingers thankfully found a patch that was rough and cracked from some long forgotten mishap, and his was able to hoist himself out with a minimum of labored grunting. The moment he was free, the junker held his hand down to give Kara a little help if she needed it.
A quick glance around helped Bax get his bearings, and he immediately remembered the fountain from the guest dropout area when he'd first arrived. The pair literally couldn't have landed in a better spot, unless they'd fallen into the sunroof of a waiting limo.
A few curious guests that gave them sideways glanced, but didn't seemed concerned at all. The Nikto and Twi'lek thugs that were approaching from the lobby doors, on the other hand, looked absolutely set on finding out where they'd come from. "Kara, we gotta go." Bax rambled off the obvious, while both trying to stay calm and shepard her towards the conga line of taxi speeders and limos.
The junker made a mental note to stop being a cheap bastard with device features, when he fished out his comlink and found it shorted out from that short bath. No way to contact the drIver he had waiting now. Should've bought the deluxe model....

Bax was hoisting himself out swiftly, and Kara took the offered hand up and out. The Togruta woman had to admit to being disappointed. She wanted nothing more powerfully at the moment than to place both hands on Bax's face, and to kiss him. To latch on, to breathe in him, to never let go. However the fact there were armed thugs piling out the doors meant a different course of action was required. Namely, running. So, sopping wet, Kara ran side by side with Bax down the long row of speeders. Presumably he had one waiting. Hopefully it was easily recognizable, and not far away.
It was honestly easier to not think.
The emotional rollercoaster wasn't over, and Kara felt... Strange. Her heart was traditionally her least-vulnerable spot, and here Bax was, changing it all, muddling it, complicating it. If she thought about too much, she'd get lost. Absolutely lost. That was too real a danger, because already she could feel this imprint on her. It was strange, it was surreal. Why did she care? Why did HE care? It raised too many questions, too many emotions. And that was a void that she didn't know how to stare into. Mostly, she skirted it, avoided it, or occasionally catered to the whims that bubbled up out of it.
Never before had she possessed the deep-seated desire to 'claim' someone. And yet that was precisely what was in her heart now. It was very alarming.
It was much easier to focus on running.

The last shreds of the colonel facade fell away, as Bax joined in with Kara in running for their lives. The water wasn't doing his movement any favors, but he had to admit the uniform almost felt like it was meant for running away from things in. The Junker's mind was racing too fast worrying about their transportation, or perhaps lack of, to chuckle at the obvious imperial officer joke to be had.
Without any means to contact him remotely, Bax's hopes lied in the driver still being in shouting distance, or more accurately whistling distance. Beyond the drop off area by the curb, and temporary parking beyond it, was the long term lots. Occupying a total of three regular parking spots, sat the slick, stylish stretch limo he'd rented for the evening, and against the shiny chromed grill was the driver.
After dodging traffic from running across the drop off zones, Bax used his fingers to let out a resounding whistle that obviously caught the bored looking Zeltron's attention. This couldn't have been his first fast exit, because he instantly took off for the driver's side hatch. The engines were already whining from start up with Bax and Kara reached the side of it.
Despite the urgency of their hasty withdraw, the junker still let the lady enter the posh interior first. His chivalry nearly cost him his life, when a blaster bolt nearly took his head off. The craft started to lift before the second shoot whizzed by, and Bax basically threw himself inside as the door began to shut automatically.
He chose to lay there on the limo's high quality carpet, just to fully process their daring escape, while the craft lurked a few times and then accelerated with noted strain on the engines. "That went better than I'd ever hoped...." Bax admitted, just staring at the dimmed lights along the ceiling.

Kara dove into the limo, moving over to buy Bax some space. He slid in after her, and the hatch closed. It wasn't precisely safety as the limo driver was now what they had to rely on, but it was good enough. Kara's bosom heaved with a silent laughter as she broadly grinned up at the ceiling with a huge relief. The sound of Bax admitting it went better than he'd hoped regained her attention, and Kara didn't delay. She practically dove onto him sopping wet, and wrapped her arms around him. Her lips connected with his, and she kissed him hard.
It was delivered with a backlog of passion to compensate for, and when she finally emerged for breath her hands cradled his cheeks.
"Bax..." She smiled broadly, "Oh Bax..."
Somehow the words she was thinking weren't translating into speech. The 'love' word in particular was a bit of a pill to swallow. So instead she just kissed him again, arms snaking behind his neck and resting there like she never wanted to let go.

In an odd kind of way, it was the times he wasn't being chased and/or shot at that Bax felt the most..."lost". Conflict, and having some semblance of a plan to solve, always seemed to bring out the best in him. The days spent in transit from one interesting mishap to the next, had of way of just being slightly depressing. They gave the junker plenty of time to reflect of his meager, and ultimately pointless, existence.
Still, it was the occasions that he had a beautiful woman on his lips that made the worse bits tolerable. It was even more the case with Kara. She'd actually taken him by surprise, so it a few seconds mid smooch to settle from 'escape mode' to his more amorous state. Just hearing his name roll off her tongue turned him off, wet clothes or no.
When the togruta's hands went high, his went low, and he wrapped his arms around her waist. Bax would move them to her thighs if she wanted to properly mount him, but for now just used the pair to home her close. Between kiss though, he ran a quick hand over Kara's ass to knead its supple flesh. The junker never got tired of doing that.
Bax waited for them to part lips for a quick breath, to throw out a few fast words. "Kara...I..uh, it's good to have you back." He stated, feeling totally underwhelmed himself over what he'd just said. It felt like a cop out, or a dodge of what he really wanted to say. Why screw up a good thing with emotional baggage, right? Right?
"Um...should I tell the driver to do a few laps around the city while we catch up, or should we pick this up when we're dry on The Drifter?"
