One benefit Bax had failed to realize about playing an imperial officer in polite company was that nobody wanted to talk to you. At least the esteemed guests of the hutts anyway. The colonel ended up being one of several guests all convening on the stairs, but when his turn came up nobody looked pleased to hear "Colonel Ventac Seeglain, of the Imperial Army".
As he descended the stairs he swore he saw multiple people looking as if a company of stormtroopers would be filing in next. In a way the junker was happy to be the center of attention for once, that wasn't because of his fashion choices. If he could he would have brought along the stormtroopers, just to mess with people and eat all the snacks.
Speaking of which, the colonel immediately went for the hors d'oeuvre table. He stepped lively towards his destination, but didn't deviate from the crisp pace he'd grown accustomed to. Catching the servers giving him sideways glances, as of he'd toss them in a labor camp over undercooked Nuna, made he look mostly at the premade stuff.
Seeglain had just discovered a most fantastic kind of spread on crackers when the herald droid announced the name he'd been looking for. His current cracker was knocked back and washed down with a sip of champagne as his togruta friend descended from on high. For once, the colonel allowed himself to crack a little smile.
Bax had long thought of Kara as down right stunning, but the regal fare today uped it to a scale he hadn't imagined possible. The colonel gently weaved his way through the small crowd of gawkers to the forefront as she reached the bottom. He approached with a professional familiarity, but a much warmer look in his eye.
"Lady Alasri, good to see this latest..vacation hasn't diminished your grace, or beauty." Seeglain stated, before pausing to raise her hand to his lips. "Your father will be beside himself with joy, to see you return home."

Sikaara moved down the steps with careful and deliberate grace, her green eyes fixating on the human down below. It was almost difficult to avoid licking her lips, his uniform was impeccable. The perfectly crisp pressed black, the shine in his boots so bright her reflection could be seen, and the green silk sash that matched her eyes quite splendidly. Oh she could feel the beating of her own heart a little faster now, and not from the stress of disguise.
She held up her gloved hand upon reaching him, as decorum required, and she could feel his lips lightly touch through the thin leather.
"It's never been such a pleasure to see you Colonel Seeglain," Kara added graciously, looking about with a polite smile. "Might I add, you've never looked quite so splendid?"
The music in the background began anew, and the slight hubbub of her entrance began to die down swiftly. They blended in reasonably well. Not important enough to attract unwelcome attention, but neither poorly enough to be conspicuous. They were there, visibly, and that was good. The comfortable middle was her precise goal, and she intended to enjoy that.
Her head tilted at a slight angle, the tall 'horns' on her head moving with her, and she smiled rather vivaciously.
"Tell me Colonel, would you honor me with a dance? It's been so long since I've had a proper one, I'm positively starved for the experience. I'd be immensely grateful for this, in your debt once again."
The subtext was hopefully clear, you make me happy now, I make you happy later.

Under Kara's compliments, the colonel actually cracked a small smile. Bax had gotten used to holding his persona's standard frown the act felt almost foreign, as if this was literally his first. It was official, his togruta friend could literally bring a smile to the hardest of faces.
"Thank you, milady." Was all the colonel could really reply at that moment. He wanted to say so much more, but for the mission, and decency's sake, he held back his words and feelings. In light of them finally being reunited as free beings, Bax was going to suggest they quietly make for the exit. However, Kara's request killed that idea before it was said. He couldn't deny her anything.
"It's been awhile for myself as well, but I will accept the honor." The colonel replied, with a joyous but a slight haughty tone, before reached out to gently take her hand. The way Bax saw it, it was best to keep a certain professional air to everything he and his friend did, at while they could be under scrutiny. Empire officers didn't lust after alien women, at least openly.
With that the colonel led his dance partner to the edge of the dance floor to watch the flow of those waltzing to a tune he should know. Seglain remained stone faced for a moment or two, while his inner self tries to recall how to waltz properly. With a smalloncehale for courage, the colonel extended their held hands out, placed his other on her shoulder and eased them into the group already in progress.
Deep in the back of his mind he had to thank his dear grandmother for this, may her rotten soul burn in hell, and picked up the steps to this particular dance from memories formerly suppressed. "Your debt is not to me, milady, but to the empire...however I will receive the payment personally this once." Seeglain exclaimed rather clearly at first, but lowered his voice to deliver the last bit, after spinning Kara and pulling her close for a moment.

The lilting music was the perfect accompaniment, as the assembled couples danced. Bax's footwork wasn't impeccable, and Kara had to dart back her toes a few times to avoid his feet, but overall it went exceptionally well. It certainly wasn't a 'romantic film' moment in which everyone else stood by and watched their majestic dancing, but it was quite splendid. To move about so freely, twirling so her headtails danced with her, it was exhilarating.
The dance finished, and as the music slowly died down into a calmer and more subdued piece, perfect for slower and more intimate dancing, Kara drew closer. She directed Bax's hand a little lower down her waist, burying herself close to him like a thimiar nestling into a burrow, and took the chance to whisper.
"It's really a relief to see you, and you clean up very, very nicely. You should consider doing this more often. You, me, elite party, impersonating an officer..." The suggestion was accompanied by a surprisingly lively and mischievous grin.
He wasn't bad at the dancing, and his bearing and deocorum were perfect. Eerily so. It reminded her of all the officers she'd met, some more than others. It was a little window onto a snippet of her life years ago. Somehow she felt able to romanticize it. Certainly at the time there'd been nothing romantic or pleasant about it, only another little set of deceptions and much greater physical risk. But yet, there was a very slight something. If not for all the racism, well, maybe associating with the Empire wouldn't have been so bad...
It was easy to get lost in the music and the moment, and it was telling how Kara actually was floating in it carefree. That kind of visible pleasant emotion was beyond even the finest actress.

Under the colonel's still rigid expression of mild enjoyment, the best he could muster while still looking like a hard ass, Bax was sweating bullets only a few minutes into the waltz. His retained memories of how to do this dance had run dry, so he was basically started winging it from those around them. The junker figured it was only a matter of time before someone noticed or he stepped on Kara's dainty toes. He feared the latter the most.
Once the music died down he let out a huge mental sigh at the ordeal being over. However, in his mad endeavor to remember so much from so far back, he'd kinda put Kara out of his mind in a way. While dancing she'd turned into a factor, at least her enjoyment, in the success of completing his task. The new intimate turn that the dance took reassured her into his feelings.
"Thanks. You know you're always stunning, but you seem born to wear clothes and jewels this elegant. We really gotta do this more often,... just under better circumstances. I might try a junior officer next time though, I've never frowned so much in my life as a colonel." He whispered back, letting the Seeglain slip from his voice just to let the Bax through for a moment.
Aftwards the junker just let him and his friend drift along their mutual enjoyment of each others company with the music. Although, Bax was getting close to having a really deep debate with himself over Kara and their partnership. Beyond the great sex and interesting happenstance that came with her, he was really starting to get attached to the togruta.
"You know, we could go to a ritzier place than New Cov after this if you want instead..."

Bax's compliments had never resounded quite so well with Kara. It was probably because she couldn't even call them flattery. No, flattery was not truth by nature, and the delicious honesty of Bax's statement was like a cool rain on a hot day, or like honey on the tongue. It was precisely what she wanted, and she wasn't about to deny it, nor to play coy. She was meant for the clothes and the jewelry, despite her humble origins. Maybe if things had been different, or if she'd been different. It wasn't thoughts to get lost in. She'd risk discovering she had a conscience.
Instead, Kara opted for humor. She put a mock-wounded face on and pouted in her most charming fashion.
"Junior officer? Couldn't I do so much better than that?" It was rhetorical of course, and they both knew it. Her grin resumed afterwards, though she did slip into a more thoughtful expression over the mention of New Cov. It was a valid point he raised, they could go anywhere. It was a very large galaxy, with plenty of opportunity for the finer things, but as Sikaara thought more and more, she came to realize two distinct factors.
The first was that they'd almost certainly need to lie low at least a slight bit when eventually this establishment discovered there wasn't any such persons as the two of them claimed to be. The second was that she had some almost unrealistic expectations of duality. Yes she wanted to wear jewelry and fine silk dresses, but she wanted to walk barefoot through moss like some kind of ethereal nature-goddess. That ruled out 99.99% of high society.
"No, it's fine. I think lying low for a while may be best, besides my gallant hero, we could use the financial rewards New Cov provides."
A toothy smile was paired, but at the sight beyond Bax's shoulder, it abruptly died. He was there, at the top of the stairs, not looking at them, thanks to whatever gods or fate held the universe together. But he was still as she remembered, jet black hair slicked back, jaw chiseled like an artist's statue, cruel features... There was a new feature, a scar on his cheek, and an eye patch? That was dramatic. Her heart beat faster, and not entirely from fear.
The white of his uniform tunic was stainless, and the black riding breeches were pristine, the tall boots perfectly spit-shined. He was currently talking inaudibly with a rather stuffy social official.
"Don't look," Kara said softly. "Don't attract any attention. We need to go. As soon as I finish talking, we stop dancing, casually, and walk to the terrace. Nod if you understand, but play it very cool."
The stuffy man finally seemed to nod, and stepped forward.
"Presenting Major Raxel Derne of the Imperial Security Bureau."

The colonel's self control was again tested to its breaking point, after being exposed to Kara's pouty face. Her features were beautiful to begin with, but the faux sadness just added a adorable to them as well. A bit of Bax slipped for just a second, his lips stared to pucker for a kiss, yet logical and the colonel's harsh ideals won out. Instead he just smiled.
Seeglain could only let out a husky chuckle at her words that followed. For Kara, he'd gladly go somewhere as a grand admiral if he had a white uniform and epaulettes. That might be incredibly difficult and stupid to attempt, let alone pull off, but doing it for Kara seemed to make it worth while, if just for the adventure that could ensue.
Bax hadn't always been lonely on his own cruising the galaxy, but damn it it get boring sometimes. Liquor, dancing girls and even junker lost their appeal sometimes when you realize it'll be over and on to the next thing before you knew it. Watching his ass and keeping Kara out of trouble seemed like a permanently ongoing ordeal in comparison.
The failure of his plan to keep them away from New Cov was a failure, but the colonel's expression or demeanor still remained as jolly as he could muster without breaking character. However, the look Kara put on next chilled him to the bone. It was the thousand year stare of someone witnessing some just as unexpected as it was unpleasant. Bax knew it all too well.
The colonel was a fraction of a second from turning around before his partner told him otherwise. His gut soured quickly as she issues her next instructions, and he was nearly shaking at first when he moved to leave together. Seeglain released his embrace with his togurta friend, before slowly starting to stroll toward the massive glass doors leading to the outside.
With every passing step Bax was waiting for someone to just yell 'Hey you!' from behind, or just gun them down without warning. As soon as the greeter droid gave a name to his terror he immediately wished it hadn't. Of all the casinos in all the galaxy, why did an ISB officer have to come into this one. He suspected the Twi'lek.
When they the doors unhindered he still took the time to play the gentleman, and let Kara pass through first. A false sense of security fell over Bax as soon as it seemed they were safe among the stone statues and high hedges weaving across the area. The colonel noted this was the best garden he'd been in outside of Naboo and possibly Coruscant.
"Ok, mind telling me who the hell that guy is? I assume you two have met before..." Bax asked, in a hushed but manic tone, while fishing for his comlink.

Sikaara walked as quickly as she could without drawing unwanted attention, Bax held open the door, and she moved through it swiftly. The outside was muggy, a kind of unpleasant humidity made bearable from how much skin she had exposed, and from the fact it was getting on towards sunset. Rapidly in fact. Soon the hedges, the ornate statues, and the stone benches would be lit only by the beautiful lights wired all about the terrace garden. It would've been perfectly romantic, but under other and very different circumstances. As it was, Kara's heart was still pounding in her chest.
Of course Bax had to ask.
The Togruta's first response was distinctly colored with fear, and a little anger.
"It's a long story best told very, very far from here."
Kara didn't delay, but kept walking to a stone bench a little further into the garden, but she stopped despite herself, sitting heavily on it. She looked surprisingly glum. Certainly it was more breadth of genuine emotion than she tended to show. Frankly the Togruta could be a real bitch. She knew it. A duplicitous one at that. But the time had come for at least a little truth.
"Let's say there's a reason why I left Shili behind. I wound up in Imperial trouble, managed to catch his eye, and we had a... thing." Her green eyes flitted about as if looking on past memories. Thankfully she didn't let out any awkward physical signs of her immensely mixed feelings. "Problem is how that ended. But more importantly, he knows Shili. Our cover stories won't fool him, even if he did fail to recognize me."
It was something of an impasse...
___________
Major Raxel Derne moved deliberately down the steps, and looked about. His reasons for coming were entirely his own, but they were about to dramatically change. He shifted his weight very slightly, making eye contact with various guests, most of whom quickly looked away. He didn't bother himself with them, only with the well-dressed Twi'lek who swiftly approached.
"Pardon my curiosity Major," He began, "I'm not used to receiving Imperial guests and-"
Derne held up a hand in warning.
"I'm not concerned with your pleasantries," He spoke in a cultivated accent tinged with menace. "I came here for specific information from specific people."
"Of course, I wouldn't interfere, but I was just curious to see two people from the Empire today..."
"Two?" Derne repeated slowly, his gaze drilling into the functionary with a penetrating intensity.

Being away from his ship, without a blaster and riding on an elaborate lie, Bax's calm cold persona was fading fast. After his question he licked his lips out of reflex for the sweat starting to form on his upper one, and he checked over his shoulder expecting a squad of stormtroopers to be on the other side of the glass. Things were quickly starting to leave their control.
Still, the look Kara cast gave him all the reason in the world to pull himself together. He wasn't gonna either of them any good in panic mode. At this point Bax just let the colonel slip away, and let out a calming sigh of sorts before heading after her towards the bench.
The Junker looked over his shoulder a second time for pursuers before joining her. As adorable as her pouty look had been what seemed like an hour ago now, the genuine look of gloom was just soul crushing. Bax's own emotion went almost the full spectrum, starting at abject sadness for his friend's feelings, seething hatred towards the ISBastard for the implication of their relationship and finally a sort of weird joy being there for Kara at a time like this.
"Hey, it'll be alright." He attempted to assure her. "Alright, so we literally can't play this diplomatic anymore, our next step is to get the hell off this Terrance. The limo I arrived on was supposed to stay close, so he might be able to swing by for a pickup. Other than that, I guess we could climb down."
At the end of their less than ideal options, the junker reached over to just grasp her hand in his. "If I get a chance, I swear I'll shoot him for you. If you don't do it first~"

Kara's mind was twirling about in full tilt like an especially agile Twi'lek dancer, searching for solutions. Luckily Bax had transportation arranged. The question remaining was how to get to it. It was a very large terrace, and tall at that. Further, there weren't exactly any maps, and she hadn't been through the area before. It was very much a maze of hedges, statues, benches, gazebos, and fountains. Lush, beautiful, but problematic...
And abruptly her thoughts were sidetracked as Bax held her hand. She looked up, genuinely rather touched over the gesture, but also confused. She looked at him, not quite understanding for a moment, and then she smiled thinly and shook her head.
"Oh no Bax, it's not like that. I'd scarcely mind going back again if I didn't know he'd kill me. Probably personally. That's the problem, not that I have something against him. I just want to live. That's all."
She leaned over and kissed him, on the cheek and lightly.
"It's sweet of you though. But right now we need to think, and quickly."
The thoughts all resumed, and her eyes flitted about the garden until they came to rest at the far end. Scarcely visible was a Gazebo, with a bubbling waterfall by it. That fall had to go somewhere, somewhere down, and that at the least made it a point of escape.
"Split up, we'll look for exits for the next few minutes, meet me at that Gazebo in ten. If we don't find anything better, that'll be the way to get out of here."
---------
Major Derne's eyebrow rose steadily higher at the fact a Stormtrooper Colonel was here, and from Shili no less. The Twi'lek was a functionary, a diplomatic, silver tongue used to being tactful in the ways a Hutt master couldn't be. He left out, of course, plenty of information, including every reason why there was another Imperial in the facility. Of course Derne was no stranger to half-truths and incomplete data, but he still found it compelling. As near as he knew, he was the only person to have any contacts in the room. If there was anything compromised...
"That will be quite enough, you're dismissed," He told the Twi'lek with a wave of his hand, and the pretentious servant disappeared away to whatever he spent his time doing. With calm and steady strides, the ISB Major walked to the nearest party-goer and introduced himself. It was a very small matter to inquire after the Colonel, a certain 'Ventac Seeglain.' Apparently he'd walked out onto the terrace with a female companion.
That had raised the eyebrow once again, social occasions? On Nal Hutta? It was rather far from the duty posting, perhaps his old station had slipped further down in priority now that the pipeline of fugitive Jedi was drying up...
Derne turned towards the terrace door, and walked slowly towards it. This would be a very interesting conversation indeed...

Kara's response to his words was a little surprising, just because they sounded a bit counterintuitive to him. To Bax everything she'd originally said about the major, this follow up and the things that went unsaid just further highlighted why he was worth shooting in the face. The junker would've killed him for keeping him from potentially coming home by itself.
Bax had put on a concerned frown during the explanation, but his friend's kiss quickly brought a weak smile back to it. She could always put a smile on his face, or a frown on the bitch days.
"Alright, I'll take this section. I'll signal you with a bird call if things go to shit before the ten. Plan for the worse. Please be careful..." The Junker replied to the game plan, with concern plain in his eye.
As much as he felt it was a bad idea to split up under the circumstance, Bax admitted the necessity of it all and went his way. The regal banners that lined the bounds of the terrace caught his eye immediately. A plan started to formulate about descending to freedom by tying several together, but the sudden closing of the door they'd exited brought that to an end.
Bax praid that the new visit was one of the many party guests coming out for some air, but he knew neither he or Kara's luck was that good. It was difficult to pull off with the normally distinctively loud boots he had on, yet he was able to tip toe behind a few rows of hedges. Someone wearing similar boots was approaching fast.
The Junker had to bite his lip to keep from cursing as he caught a quick glimpse of a white tunic and black pants. It was the ISBastard for sure. After the steps became a little distant Bax did his best to recall a few dates he had with this naturist girl on Coruscant, and let lose a call of the Telosian net weaver. It sounded less like an aquatic preying bird and more like a dying nuna, but he imagined Kara got the message.
A short bit of tip toeing later, and Bax had the waterfall within eyesight. He didn't see Kara, but would be ready to bolt the second she made her move. The Junker let out a genuine Nuna call this time, and it was pretty spot on.

Major Derne moved through the garden, looking about it methodically. Somewhere in this array of finery was the person he'd decided to take an interest in. Probably rather too 'interested' in whatever female company he had. Not that Derne would necessarily blame an officer so such a showing, at a fine gathering in attire, an amount of wine, it was all too easy. But then, Derne reminded himself as his strong hands flexed in their gloves, that was more the case for other people. Less disciplined ones.
His first turn was to the right, moving through the rows of neatly-manicured hedges. Somewhere nearby a bird called. It wasn't unusual enough for him to take note of it, but as he moved further and saw precious little, he began to frown. Perhaps he'd taken the wrong direction? The Major backtracked, and was rewarded after momentary searching by the sight of a black uniform.
The manner of an ISB officer was not typically polite to excess, only to the manner required. Nominally Colonel was higher than Major. But the ISB enjoyed great perks, perks everyone was well-aware of. In practice they were at best equals, and Derne would flex his superiority if he felt the need to do so. His first instinct though was to play it politely.
"Ah, Colonel," Major Derne began in his cool and measured voice, "I was hoping to find you since I'd heard another servant of the Empire was present. Allow me to introduce myself, I am Major Raxel Derne of the Imperial Security Bureau."
The man slowly held out a hand to shake, as if the offer itself were some great gesture of charity and kindness. From the ISB though, it practically was.

Despite the massive load of shit he instantly found himself in, Bax had to let out a dry chuckle that the call of a dumb bird had brought an ISB officer instead. The had luckily caught him with his back turned, so he had time to return to the steely gaze and stern face of the colonel as he slowly spun around to confront his fellow Imperial.
Seeglain locked his stare into the other man's eyes, with a look of mild acceptance that came from running into one of the most hated internal branches. ISB and II were an empire apart compared to the those of the more mundane service branches, at least they thought they were.
"Colonel Ventac Seeglain, of the Stormtrooper Corp." He replied a few seconds after accepting the offered shake, with an icy but cordial tone.
"I was not informed that someone of your office would be attending this gala, but I suppose that is the way you prefer to operate. Is it not, major." The colonel continued, as he let his hands fall casually to his side. In his experience these internal affairs types lived to see someone sweat, but he wasn't going to give this guy the satisfaction.
"Forgive my forwardness, but what business does ISB have with this musky slice of the galaxy tonight?"

Derne smiled thinly, in a predatory fashion. The Colonel was resting on his laurels, clearly under the impression his nominally superior rank counted for something. Oh he coached it in pleasant terms, but there was no denying he had the gall to ask questions. It was charming, and suggested the young officer had experienced little with the ISB. If he was very lucky, it would stay that way as well.
"I was not informed by mine of your attendance either, and information is my business. As to why I'm here though Colonel, I'm afraid the matter is, shall we say, above your clearance? I assure you that it's nothing to concern yourself with though."
He let a certain smug warning into his tone.
"It's not as if I came here simply to review your particular performance. Though I have to confess I'm wondering why a Stormtrooper Officer is so far from his home posting. Shili, I understand. A very interesting planet. I was stationed there myself in fact, perhaps we have some mutual acquaintances..."
