Appearance:
Standing in at 1.95 meters, and an extremely muscular 96.1 kilograms, Ben is by definition tall, dark, and handsome. If you look in the dictionary to find a definition for “Tall, Dark, and Handsome”, you'll find a picture of Ben. No really. Go check. I'll wait…
… Okay, back? Anyways… For starters, Ben is built. Not ‘Hulk’ built, mind you. But mops are usually needed when he looses his shirt around most ladies. The random patterns of scars (mostly gained from the Clone Wars) across his torso, and a few on his arms? They only add to the ‘mops-needed’ factor. Ben is meticulous and precise about caring for his body, and it shows. No tattoos. No flab. Plently of exercise.
Just like his body, Ben keeps his dark hair neat and orderly. Short up top, with a precisely kept goatee and beard, no longer than a handful of centimeters at most in either area. Not short enough that he might as well cut it all off, but not long enough to worry about. The rest of his body possesses very little to no hair as well, either naturally or cut that way, aside from his arms and legs.
Ben’s clothing is rather simple. He wears a long, olive overcoat, under which he usually has a tan or white long sleeve shirt with a few buttons up towards the collar. Beneath the shirt, Ben has two belts; a simple one, holding his pants, and a larger, brown one with a hip holster for his DL44 Blaster Pistol. Ben's pants are usually a tan or khaki, with a yellow stripe down the side of each leg, ending in shin-high brown leather boots.
The two items that are usually hidden on Ben? His lightsaber, for starters, in his jacket. Easily accessible, but hidden from sight. The second is a single akul tooth on a string around his neck, a momento from his Trial of Skill.
Personality:
A quiet man with a stern gaze, Ben is the type of person who just doesn't have much to say. He's a closed book, as opposed to the open one some people can tend to be, and doesn't believe in associating strangers into his business. Therefore, Ben’s not the type to make friends easily. Usually, such relationships are only developed when someone else tries to pursue Ben’s friendship, instead of vice versa.
However, Ben can be annoyed easily, and can snap once he's there. Grumpiness is almost a mainstay for the man at this point in his life, as well as eye-rolling, huffing, and sighing. A deeply held anger can spring up every once in a blue moon, but Ben tries his best to keep such things in check.
Once you dig through the bad things that rise to the surface, though, you can really see that Ben's heart is golden. He cares, he's just very cautious to show it. And somewhere, deep down is the model Jedi he used to be. It's just been trodden on repeatedly in the past sixteen years. Such things come out around those Ben cares about. The quietness, and the resting bitch face remains, but around those who really know Ben, he's much more soft spoken, with a simple sense of humor. He tries to show he cares.
Tries.
Ben's a very precise person, and meticulous to a fault. Shower times, eating, going to sleep, exercising… Just about everything has a routine. And Ben's routine has produced a creature of habit. He attributes it to his Jedi discipline, but in all reality he finds a sense of normalcy among his habit. Not that he freaks out when the routine is broken. He just furrows his brow and sighs.
Everything that Ben does has a purpose. Everything onboard his ship has a purpose. This is something he tries to transfer over to romantic relationships as well. Ben wants relationships that have purpose. He thought he'd be settled down this long after the Purge, with his own family, and its still a wish he holds in the back of his heart. Though things haven't faired well for the Ex-Jedi in that department, which makes him extra picky and cautious. And despite this, Ben's not against the occasional fling or one night stand when he needs it.
And finally, Ben is an amazing cook. Like truly. Like, he could take the food you hate most, serve it to you, and you'd love it. It's a talent that comes naturally to him, and Refrigerator Burritos are a speciality of his.
History:
Ben started life as a Jedi (“Oh my GOD, a second one, Ghostie?” YES! Now shush and listen!). Or rather, he started off life with an offer from the Jedi to train him. However Ben was the first child that Lyra Covell, his mother, had. She was a young maid in a large estate on Alderaan, who'd fallen victim to a noble's charming advances. Despite the fact that Ben was never planned, Lyra loved him dearly as any self-respecting mother would.
Images and creeping feelings is all Ben could remember of Alderaan for a while, though. His first real memory was the grand entrance to the Jedi Temple. For when the noble that knocked Lyra up found out she was pregnant, he fired her, cut her a check, and never saw her again. But the money went quickly, and Lyra did all she could to care for Ben. But in the end, it just couldn't happen. So on his third birthday, Ben’s mother gave him to the Jedi Order, hoping to give him a better life.
Ben’s first years at the Jedi Temple were pretty mundane and uneventful. He was one of the biggest kids there, and very few of the other younglings messed with him or his friends. Yes, he had a gaggle of friends that seemed to look at him as a leader. But just about the only interesting thing to happen at this time was Ben meeting Adria, a blonde haired human girl, and one of the only friends he kept in contact with into his padawan years (yes, we ALL know where Ben and Adria are going, now shut up!)
At the age of twelve, Ben was chosen as a padawan, later than many of his friends as a few of the masters shied away from the fact that Ben was a bit too aggressive in the dueling ring. But that ended up being one of the reasons he was chosen. For the master that chose to train Ben was none other than a Togruta named Ashla Rin. Rin was advanced in her years, but not yet elderly. And the Togruta was something of a maverick in the Jedi Order; a warrior, in a time of relative peace. Rin had a bit of a track record of padawans either falling to the dark side, dying, or both. But she was determined to change things, when she took on Ben. (Just for you, Moff Poobah)
The first couple years under Master Rin’s tutelage, Ben almost wished that he had been sent to one of the Corps instead. The days were long, the work and training was rough, and on a few occasions, Ben swore that the Togruta had literally worked him down to the bone. But the end results were hard to argue with, as Rin had turned Ben into one, in not the, most skilled Jedi his age. Plus, there were those rare occasions that Master Rin offered a softer, more gentle side. And it was always when Ben needed it the most. It may have taken awhile, but Ben and Rin grew so close, that the boy began to even pick up on a few of the Togruta’s habits and attitudes.
It was at the age of fifteen that Ben built his lightsaber. The look and style wasn't very special, having picked a popular Djem So style for the hilt that was currently taking the Order by storm. However, Master Rin influenced Ben’s engineering. She convinced him to make the weapon waterproof, and to leave out an activation button. Instead, the Togruta took the time teaching Ben how to activate the lightsaber with the Force. But before that, he needed a crystal, which he spent almost a whole day looking for on Ilum. Ben would never quite grasp why he needed a specific blue crystal, but it seemed important to Master Rin, so it was important to him.
It wasn't long after Ben built his lightsaber, a little less than a year, in fact, that the Clone Wars broke out across the galaxy worse than acme on a teenager’s face. (Sidenote: How do Jedi deal with acme? Can they Force it away?) Though a few Jedi Masters had reservations about leading their padawans into a war, Ashla Rin wasn't one of them. Ben and the Togruta fought side by side in the first battle, on Geonosis, leading some of the first clones down onto the red sands of the planet. Afterwards, the Master/Padawan Duo was part of the force that stayed on Geonosis, while the majority of the army moved on.
As the war raged, Ben and Master Rin saw much of the galaxy. Most of it, unfortunately, was bathed in blood and fire. But as they traveled, Ben met more Jedi than he knew existed. And he saw his friend Adria for the first time in a long time. Master Rin was insightful, and intelligent. And it was immediately after the first time that Ben saw Adria, that his Master pulled him aside and warned him about attachment and romance. But did Ben listen? (You really need an answer? He's a teenager, for christsakes. YOU try getting one to listen, especially when there's a cute blonde involved.) With the war raging, and the Masters busy elsewhere, Ben and Adria made what time they could for one another, and no one seemed to catch on. (P.S. Warned you they were going there.)
Near the start of the last year of the War, Ben and Ashla were stationed on Alderaan. (Of course.) It was, Ben decided quickly, one of the most beautiful planets he had seen. Though, it helped that it wasn't war-torn. Master Rin gave Ben a bit of freedom on Alderaan, letting him leave the base now and then for some leisure time. And one night, while walking through Aldera, the young man witnessed a few refugees roughing up an older woman. Being your typical Jedi, Ben intervened. The woman soon revealed herself to be Lyra Covell, Ben’s own mother. (I reiterate, ‘of course’. But don't worry, it'll all have a reason later on) Keeping the meeting a secret from Master Rin, Ben grew to know his mother. He, in turn, told Lyra all about his life. About Adria, and his Master, and the Jedi. Meanwhile, Ben learned that Lyra had married an Iridonia, named Eeth, and he had a half-sister, named Celia. But before Ben had a chance to meet them, he and Master Rin were transferred once again.
As the Clone Wars started to wind down, Ashla and Ben found time for more Jedi-like items on their agenda, as opposed to making war. Chief among these was getting Ben ready for face his Trials for Knighthood. As a sort of way to unwind from the War, Ashla took Ben on a trip to Shiil, her home planet, and to her own tribe. For a few days, Ben was able to learn their customs and cultures, and travel with a few hunting parties. The tribe itself was very welcoming to the pair of Jedi. On one particular hunting trip, Ben helped slay an akul, a rather tough opponent, even for the experienced Togruta hunters. This, Ashla decided, was enough for the young man’s Trial of Skill. (Second part for Poobah. I had to go all the way.)
But that Trial would be the only one that Ben would ever complete. For when Ashla and Ben were away on Shili, Order 66 was put into motion, and the Galactic Empire was declared. This, the pair found out the hard way. For when they traveled back to Cover City to retrieve their shuttle and travel back to Coruscant, they were ambushed by their own clones, sent to kill them. The two Jedi barely escaped the ambush. Taking their shuttled, Ben and Ashla ditched the ship and their Jedi garb on Ord Mantell, a short hyperspace jump away from Shili.
And at this point, it was fair to say the two Jedi were lost in the Galaxy. They had no home. No Order. No goals. Only each other. So that's what they stuck with. The first few months were spent trying to figure out basic things; food, shelter, and money. Once the two raised enough credits, they bought a used YT-2400 freighter, which Ashla promptly named The Revenant. This became both their home, and means of travel.
And travel is exactly what they did. Always one step ahead of the Imperials and always out of money, Ashla and Ben spent the first year or so on the edges of known Space, away from much of civilization. But still, eventually “civilization” found them. On a particularly long layover on Tatooine, Ben and Ashla were discovered by some local gangsters to be Jedi. And Jedi had a high bounty. Needless to say, they were chased off the planet, and out of Hutt Space for that matter.
With nowhere else to go, Ben suggested heading for the Core, thinking that right under their noses would be the last place that the Empire looked for Ex-Jedi. Alderaan, in particular, came to mind, and Ben finally revealed to Ashla the meeting he had during the Clone Wars with his mother. Lyra and Eeth and Celia accepted the two Force-Users into their home, but it didn't last long. One night, a Kel Dor named Gnost Dural showed up at the house, looking for Ben and Ashla part of the Alderaanian Resistance, Gnost hoped to recruit the Jedi in their fight against the Empire.
It worked.
So for the next couple years, Ashla and Ben worked for the Alderaanian Resistance, fighting the Empire from the shadows. It was at this time, Ben met a blue-skinned Twi’lek named Ayra. She too worked for the Resistance, and Ben grew close to her quickly. Ashla, this time, couldn't say anything against the relationship. Instead, she just warned Ben to stay focused.
Also, the Togruta declared that her former padawan was a real Jedi Knight, by now. But that didn't sit well with Ben. It felt empty, and hollow. Without an Order, who cared if he was a Jedi Knight? Anymore, the young man saw his lightsaber as a tool, and a weapon. Not a symbol. Needless to say, Ben wasn't the happiest of people at this time.
And things only got worse. The Resistance went through a bad rash of failed missions, most of which Ben was a part of. And in the last one he partook, Ayra was captured, and executed before Ben could rescue her. After a bit of a break, Ashla confronted him about finding other Jedi. But Ben had enough. He didn't see a point anymore. Fighting the Empire was fighting a losing battle. And Ashla admitted that she, too, had become disenfranchised with the whole idea. Stealing away in the dead of night, the pair took The Revenant, and left Alderaan.
Shili was their first stop, at Ashla’s request. It was here that she left Ben. They decided, this time, to split up from one another and draw less attention. It was heart breaking, to be sure. Ben had been following Ashla’s lead for the better part of his life. Once farewells were made and Ashla was gone, Ben took The Revenant, and made for the Fringes of space once again. To make money, he resorted to smuggling, and freelance mercenary work, losing himself in the folds of the galaxy.
It was in a bar on Mygeeto, about six months after leaving Ashla, that Ben ran into the last person he ever expected; Adria, his childhood friend and former teenage flame. Ben wasted no time in inviting his fellow Ex-Jedi to join him on The Revenant, which Adria did. And the pair wasted no time restarting their relationship where they left off. And for a long time, Ben was happy. Happier than he had been since before The Purge. Adria was everything he needed. About a year into things, he actually asked her to marry him.
And then woke up to Adria trying to kill him in his sleep.
Adria revealed that the only way she had survived the Jedi Purge was by throwing in with the Empire, and becoming one of their feared Inquisitors. And if Ben wasn't going to join her, then he had to die. The Adria he knew was gone. And Ben wasn't going to do anything with her, anymore. They fought, he won, and trusted the fall from a landing platform on Nar Shaddaa (where The Revenant was parked, duh) to finish what he couldn't. Then it was back to working alone. It was about this time that Ben started to really hit the bottle.
He gave it a couple years, and then decided to hop on the relationship horse once again. This time, it was a Zeltron Ben met as a contact named Jayda. Jayda was beautiful, even by Zeltron standards, and Ben asked her out the moment they met. But once the two became a real couple, it seemed like Jayda latched herself to his hip. She followed him everywhere. She tried turning his ship into “their ship”. Hell, it only took her eight weeks to tell him she loved him. And when four months rolled around, and Ben hadn't proposed yet, Jayda almost killed him with a kitchen knife. That's when Ben got rid of her, not bothering to slow down The Revenant he dropped Jayda on her perfect Zeltron ass on Iego.
Then, eight months later, The Revenant was stolen off of Naboo
It wasn't a hard starship to track down. A bright orange YT-2400? Ben found it within the week, on Rori. And the soonest he stepped onboard, Jayda, of all people, threw herself into Ben’s arms. She apologized profusely for the kitchen knife incident, spouting how much she loved him and how much they were destined to be together. Ben left her on Rori.
But these incidents still happen, to this day, about two or three times a year. And the amount of security Ben has on The Revenant never seems to matter.
Ben’s last, somewhat stable relationship came from a Togruta named Sheresti. Sheresti was a mechanic at a spaceport Ben frequented on Ukio, and it was her, not him, that initiated the relationship. There was no red tape with this “romance”, if you want to call it that. No love notes. No fancy dinners by candle light. No chocolates or roses. Instead, the relationship consisted of beers and junk food on the couch, sweatpants, and LOTS of sex. Easy. Casual. Fun. Ben wasn't sure how long it’d go on for. But he didn't care.
Sheresti lost her cool, though, when Jayda stole The Revenant. The Togruta had a hot head that couldn't be cooled. Ben, eventually tracked it down, and explained the situation to Sheresti. She was understanding, mostly. But then The Revenant was stolen a second time, a few months later. And when Sheresti found one of her astromechs blasted apart inside, she lost it. She told Ben that if he didn't kill Jayda this time, she would. But Ben eventually got Sheresti to calm down. And between Jayda’s pheromones and Ben’s quick words, before he knew what was happening both Sheresti and Jayda were dragging him off to bed.
The same bed.
Needless to say, it was a hell of a weekend.
But good things can't last. Not when there's Jedi involved, for some reason. And at the end of the weekend, Sheresti was ready to kill Jayda once again. Scampering out unnoticed, Ben left the impending cat fight behind him on Concord Dawn.
