Appearance: Yana is a mildly curvy and moderately athletic young woman, on the definite tall side, who has a strange mix of the attractive and unattractive to her. Her nose is prominent and hooked, her eyebrows thick and bushy, her face incredibly angular, and in possession of a scar over one of her fiery green eyes. Her skin is a soft brown shade, subdued but not off-white enough to draw wild amounts of attention, certainly next to the wide variety of colorful non-humans. What stands out a bit more is the way she expresses herself, the way she moves. Yana is not subtle. Her behaviors aren't that easily concealed, and her expressions tend to be transparent. If she's ignoring you, you can tell. If she's angry, you will know. If she's trying really hard to keep some feeling secret, it will be relatively obvious. This is because she just has an ineffable kind of liveliness about her.
Something about Yana says 'relaxed,' but with the subtext of 'ready to stab you if you piss me off.' Her usual position is leaning against a wall, sitting on the counter, or with her feet elevated. She really wouldn't know how to dress or behave at a fancy ball, and that's part of the rustic charm she manages to have.
On most occasions, she can be found wandering about in some worn leather pants, a tank top, and some form of boots. Usually there's some kind of belt. Usually she doesn't bother with a dedicated coat, if it's cold she'll grab a blanket and wrap it around herself. Thus looking even less fancy than previously thought possible.
Personality: Yana is a bit of a spitfire. She's a fiery tomboy in temper and behavior, but with all the knowledge of how to use her feminine underpinnings to her advantage. She is the kind of girl who is never at ease in fancy places, at lavish gardens, or museums. Instead she's instinctively and intuitively at home in any seedy dive, throwing knives at a dart board and drinking liquor. Given her trait to shy away from the halls of the mighty and to head straight into the nearest den of iniquity, it's not incorrect to call her a bad girl.
However despite her utter disrespect for any kind of law, Yana is a surprisingly decent sort. She's insightful, a good listener, cuts straight to the point of a matter in almost every situation, and she doesn't pay a lot of attention to fancy mannerisms and wording. As such, she's really the bad girl with a heart of gold, just don't try to work her out of her comfort zone unless she'd got real reason to do it for you.
Like all of the Ishale Sularen family, Yana subscribes heavily to personal honor and debts. If you do something for her, she will remember it and return the favor. If she likes you, she probably will still feel obligated to you. If she doesn't, she'll do the bare minimum. In this sense she can be a little fickle, compounded by the fact she often makes snap judgments. Changing her mind can be a long and arduous uphill battle.
Facts don't necessarily change her mind. Not unless they're damned specific ones. Who cares if his mother died when he was young, that guy is a foul pig. The rest is irrelevant to the fact he's a pig.
That's how her mind works. It also tends to immediately form specific battle lines, lines usually much more apparent with women than with men. These are good looks and wealth. Around very attractive men, Yana has problems with staring and tends to pick her words very badly. Around very attractive women she tends to become bitchy, passive aggressive, and in overall bad moods. This is still mild compared to wealth.
Yana tends to intrinsically dislike rich people. She can practically smell wealth, and she can't abide the bossy holier-than-thou attitudes she's seen in every rich girl. In particular she has absolutely no sympathy for anybody not willing to work, to work hard, and to work outside the law. If she gets any chance to make a spoiled rich kid's life miserable, she'll do it.
Her own work ethic is mixed. She's not the type to say 'yes sir' and 'no sir' and hustle around looking busy. She does things quick and well, and takes as much spare time as possible to sit on the counter or outside with a tabac cigarette, idly shooting the shit with anybody she likes. Come hell or high water though, she will get the job done by the deadline though.
She's got her own signature drink she makes at the family tavern, it's called the Screaming Bitch, and is composed heavily of the absolute cheapest Corellian whiskey they have, a fiery rye, paired with heavily spiced bitters, a citrus liqueur, and a cinnamon stick.
History: The Ishale Sularen family has an intriguing history to be certain. Nobody precisely knows the origins, and there's about four different spellings found out there among the 'branches.' What everyone does agree on though is that they were originally an Echani family. There was, however, a huge amount of intermarriage, to the point everything was jumbled about like a mixed up jar of multicolored hard candies. Family lore holds that Yana's branch was 'born' when one of the Echani family's daughters rebelled against her mother and married a Thyrsian who was rebelling against his father. They had a lot of kids. Those kids had other kids, marrying other more or less compatible species.
Supposedly in more recent years family lore also holds Yana's great great grandmother was a Tholothian Jedi who quit the Order over 'the sex thing.' Nobody has any proof, but it makes for a great story.
What is known for fact is this. The patriarch of her branch was Brado Ishale Sularen, a huge swarthy man with a very, very long beard and an equally long career in crime. He was something of a head in the smuggling scene on Bonadan. He had seven sons, the fifth of whom was Finn Ishale Sularen, a short man, rippling with muscle, ugly as sin, covered in tattoos, with huge muttonchops and a shaved head. He stood out from his brothers by being a tougher and edgier fucker than the others. It worked as he always managed to be a favorite of his dad.
He was able to head out on his own, with start-up costs from his dad, and began a career of piracy in the Outer Rim, near Subterrel. He made a lot of good money on it, spent it very well too, and netted a lovely wife. What precisely she was, nobody was ever exactly sure. Maybe human. Maybe mixed with something else. Either way Siyara became Finn's wife, and joined in the pirating lifestyle from time to time.
Yana was born in 27 BBY, and immediately Finn wanted to baby the girl. Siyara would have no part of it, and told him to not deviate from his deviation for anything. He was a good husband and listened intently, continuing his piratical reign... Until he ran afoul of the banking clan in 23 BBY. His ragtag pirate force was smacked down violently, and in the process Siyara was seriously injured, one of his two ships was lost. They escaped off to Terminus, and he sank money into medical bills. It wasn't the same though, and Siyara only lived another two years, dying right after the Clone Wars began. Yana was young and impressionable at six years of age, and the void in her life was very much filled with her father. She idolized him, and encouraged him to get back into piracy 'for mom.'
He agreed, and throughout the war they made a careful habit of raiding lightly protected shipping lines and depots, usually hitting whichever side was weaker in the area. They didn't discriminate. But the war ended, and it changed things as Finn discovered.
You couldn't play it fast and loose like the old days, the weak Judicial Fleet was gone, the Imperial Fleet meant business. He escaped by the skin of his teeth twice from Star Destroyers, and decided not to take a third time in risk. Finn sold his ship, 'the Saucy Sister' and took the money in 12 BBY. He relocated to Saleucami, settling into a suitably sleazy caldera settlement, Dar Ulwan. He proudly opened up a tavern.
If you could call it a tavern. It was a hole in the wall, with living quarters upstairs, a basement for storage down below that connected into the sewers and steam network powering and warming everything, and then there was a surprisingly small actual bar area. Any which way Finn quickly turned it into a meeting-place for the criminally-inclined, where information flowed with cheap liquor served by bosomy young women.
It was hardly any surprise that Yana wanted to be involved. Instead Finn adamantly held her back from getting groped, or so much as looked at, on the grounds that she was 'too young.' It was ridiculous bullshit, as she continually seethed, instead cleaning, working in the basement, and trying to be generally useful. He was overprotective to her mind, and she didn't want special treatment.
In between this she went to the only schooling program around, managing to be slightly less than properly capable in reading, and a little better in math. Her focus was never on these things though. Instead like any young woman, she had an interest in boys. In particular she was always gawking at one handsome teenager who came through the marketplace. She timed her trips to 'run into' him, but never really was able to exchange any words with him. He had less than zero interest anyway, and it infuriated Yana. Finally she agreed to date a boy she hated, just to walk by that marketplace feigning happiness, as if it would somehow show that anonymous good-looking youth who was better.
It wasn't as if she was prudish though. She lost her virginity on a Saturday night in a back alley quite happily, and was never 'above' a little fun. But she didn't connect with any of the others so much. However she also wasn't about to just be a doormat. A customer followed her down once into storage and got a little grabby. She slapped him hard across the face. He pulled a knife and slashed her in the face.
It left a very nasty scar, but it managed to avoid doing real damage to her eye, and she in turn did a lot more damage to him. Her father responded quickly and did even more damage. They wound up using the 'secret' sewer access to toss the would-be-rapist into a deluge of waste, to be washed away to an anonymous grave.
However as close as the encounter was, it proved to Finn that Yana was tougher than he'd given her credit before, and he began to more proudly introduce her to friends and customers as his daughter. She'd be involved in the little criminal schemes going about around town, finding her own useful roles as look-out, or distraction, or on occasion climbing through tall and narrow windows her father couldn't hope to reach, or to crawl through.
It made her feel pretty happy, though she constantly longed for childhood memories of 'the old days' in piracy.
More and more she became indispensable in operating the tavern, freeing up Finn to go out and scheme, or to get caught up gambling in the backroom with his friends. And the funny thing was, Yana didn't mind it at all, though sometimes she questioned if there was something more left. But never too much.
Miscellaneous Crap: Favorite haunts are the marketplace, the hotspring just outside the main town, the tavern, the spaceport. Her accent is sort of nebulous and difficult to describe, but she has a whiskey and cigarettes quality to it, for the exact reason you'd think.
